I’m Dr. Zenaidy Castro, a passionate cosmetic dentist and founder of the award-winning Vogue Smiles dental practice in Melbourne, Australia. In both my professional and artistic life, I bring the same unwavering passion, precision, and dedication to everything I do. It brings me immense joy to enhance the lives of my patients through my work—giving them not just beautiful smiles, but renewed confidence and well-being.
Over the years, I’ve been honored to receive the WOMO Australia award for Best Dentist for five consecutive years, and my clinic has proudly received the Best Customer Service award for two years running. These recognitions reflect the care and commitment I bring to my patients every single day. I take great pride in the relationships I build, making sure every person who walks into my practice feels seen, heard, and at ease—especially those who come in feeling nervous or afraid. My goal is always to ensure that my patients leave not only satisfied with their results, but feeling genuinely cared for.
This commitment to excellence and attention to detail also extends into my creative life. Since childhood, I’ve had a deep love for art—drawing and painting were always my greatest joys. The creation of beauty, in all its forms, has been a guiding force in my life. Whether I’m sculpting a perfect smile or capturing a fleeting moment through photography, I am driven by a profound desire to reveal beauty in its many expressions.
The foundation of my work—both in dentistry and in art—is the belief that beauty can transform lives. As a dentist, I’m privileged to connect with people from all walks of life. Every patient brings their own story, personality, fears, hopes, and dreams. These deeply human connections have shaped my perspective as an artist and photographer, providing a rich tapestry of experiences that inspire my creative pursuits.
At the heart of everything I do is the desire to make people feel more confident, more seen, and more loved—whether that’s through a smile I’ve crafted or an artwork I’ve created. This is who I am, both as a professional and as an artist.
Growing up, I was surrounded by the spirit of entrepreneurship—both of my parents ran their own businesses, and I often helped my mother in her gift shop after school. From a young age, I was exposed to the world of customer service, and I quickly learned that when a customer is happy, it brings deep satisfaction to the business owner, too. That early experience taught me a powerful lesson: with passion, commitment, and drive, you truly can live your dreams and achieve your goals.
That same passion and drive have stayed with me throughout my life—whether in my professional journey as a cosmetic dentist or my creative path as an artist and photographer. In everything I do, I give my whole heart. Whether I’m caring for a patient or composing a piece of art, I immerse myself completely, with joy, energy, and intention. Whether it’s trekking across rugged mountains in Patagonia or helping someone rediscover their confidence with a new smile, I approach each challenge with a sense of adventure and purpose.
It’s this love for life—this joie de vivre—that fuels my creativity and keeps my spirit curious and alive. I see both my artistic and professional lives as an ever-evolving canvas—a continuous journey of growth, learning, and the pursuit of beauty and meaning.
My fascination with beauty began early. As a child, I was captivated by art and the magic of creating something beautiful with my own hands. Drawing and painting were my first loves. That desire to express and explore beauty never left me. Even as my focus shifted in adulthood toward building my dental career and perfecting my craft, I realized that the heart of my work remained the same: helping others feel beautiful—inside and out.
Cosmetic dentistry, to me, is a form of art. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about transformation. I’ve always taken great pride in the personalized care I offer my patients, and nothing brings me more satisfaction than seeing their renewed confidence after treatment. Enhancing a smile means enhancing someone’s self-esteem, and that is profoundly rewarding.
My journey into photography actually began through my dental practice. I bought my first DSLR camera—an Olympus 5-megapixel top-of-the-line model at the time—so I could document my patients’ before-and-after results. It turned out to be one of the best investments I ever made. Capturing those bright, confident smiles sparked something inside me. That was the beginning of a new creative path.
In August 2015, I took a short photography course in Melbourne, and that’s when the passion truly ignited. While I didn’t have formal training at the time, I quickly realized that my deep love for visual storytelling and the artistic instincts I’d honed over years of painting and drawing gave me a strong foundation. I began experimenting with different styles—everything from patient portraits to landscapes, which became my favorite subjects.
Art and photography have allowed me to reconnect with that childlike wonder I’ve always had for the world. They’ve given me a powerful outlet to explore and express the beauty I see all around me. Whether through the lens or in the dental chair, I strive to touch lives, uplift others, and leave a trail of beauty, joy, and love in everything I do.
In June 2015, I said goodbye to my two beloved Sphynx cats at home and embarked on a bold, month-long photography workshop in Patagonia. It was an ambitious leap—not only because I was still a novice in photography—but also because, up until then, I hadn’t even walked a full block in my own neighborhood! And there I was, suddenly trekking across the vast, rugged, and untamed terrain of Patagonia, carrying all my gear and pushing my limits in every sense.
The experience was transformative. It challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally. Hiking those mountains wasn’t just about strength or endurance—it was about discovering the power of perseverance, learning to trust myself, and realizing how resilient I could be. Every hiker will tell you: the trail is one of life’s most honest teachers. It forces you to slow down, to notice the details around you, to listen deeply—not just to nature, but to your own body and thoughts. On that trail, I learned that the mind can either be your greatest enemy or your strongest ally.
What stayed with me the most is the lesson of putting one foot in front of the other. Progress may be slow and the journey long, but every step matters. I carried that lesson back into my life: the importance of slowing down, being present, and finding joy in the process—not just the destination. I realized that pursuing a “crazy” dream is worthwhile, even when no one else sees it. Without hardship, you don’t truly appreciate the breathtaking view at the top.
I genuinely believe that stepping outside my comfort zone has shaped who I am today. We are all a product of our choices, our victories, our failures—and our willingness to grow through all of it. If I had never dared to take that trip, I would’ve missed out on so many experiences that helped mold me into the artist and person I’ve become. One of the greatest gifts of accumulating wisdom is the ability to share it. I believe that no experience is ever wasted if you allow it to teach you something and make you better.
That trip was a series of firsts for me—my first visit to South America, my first mountain hike, and my first time fully using all my camera gear to explore my favorite genre: landscapes. When I returned to Australia, I submitted a few of my photos from that journey to an international competition—and to my amazement, I won two professional-level awards. It was such an affirming moment, especially so early in my photography journey.
What began as a simple creative outlet quickly evolved into something deeper. Initially, I saw photography as just a way to channel my imagination, but it soon became a profound extension of my identity. I’ve always had a passion for visual creativity, even as a child. Whether it’s through the precision and artistry of cosmetic dentistry or through my photographs, creating beauty and sharing it with others has always brought me immense personal satisfaction.
I had my own “aha!” moment along the way. For many years, I had been laser-focused on building my career—completing my dental studies, specializing in cosmetic dentistry, founding my own practice, and devoting myself to the service of my patients. I poured everything into creating a space where people could feel safe, heard, and truly cared for. That dedication helped me build one of Melbourne’s most celebrated dental clinics, and we were fortunate to receive multiple awards for excellence and customer service.
But then one day, I looked up and realized—there’s more. My career, while deeply fulfilling, is just one part of a much larger life. I could expand my world and embrace this growing love for visual art and the exploration of beauty. I use the metaphor of a flower garden to describe this moment: I had been so focused on studying the rich purple of a single iris, admiring its intricate beauty, that I hadn’t noticed the entire blooming garden surrounding it. That moment opened my eyes to the fullness of life.
I discovered that the same passion and care I bring to my dental work could also be channeled into my photography. Both pursuits are driven by the same core desire—to make people feel something, to connect, and to share beauty with the world. Whether it’s through a life-changing smile or a powerful image, I live to create, uplift, and inspire.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
