I’ve had the wonderful fortune of staying in some fairly amazing places throughout the years, but a night in Luna Salada was unlike any other. Yes, it’s an entire hotel fashioned from blocks of salt, at the border of the Salar de Uyuni—the world’s largest salt flat.
Luna Salada Hotel: A Salt-Built Sanctuary on the Edge of the World
Perched on the edge of the awe-inspiring Salar de Uyuni—the world’s largest salt flat—Luna Salada Hotel offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Bolivia’s Colchani region. Just a 30-minute drive from the town of Uyuni, this extraordinary hotel is not only surrounded by breathtaking views of the endless white expanse, but is also crafted entirely from one of the most abundant materials in the area: salt.
From the walls and floors to the furniture itself, including the beds, chairs, and tables, nearly everything within Luna Salada is made from locally sourced salt bricks, creating a rustic yet enchanting ambiance that perfectly complements the surreal landscape outside. The design embraces both the natural elements and the cultural richness of the Altiplano, blending modern comfort with traditional materials in a way that’s both eco-conscious and artistically striking.
The hotel features 49 well-appointed rooms, each with its own distinctive style and layout. Some rooms boast panoramic views of the salt flats, allowing guests to wake up to a dreamlike landscape bathed in ever-changing light. Whether you’re watching the golden hues of sunrise or the ethereal reflection of the sky during the rainy season, the views from Luna Salada are nothing short of magical.
Dining is an experience in itself at the hotel’s expansive restaurant, which offers sweeping vistas over the salt desert. Guests can indulge in a variety of delicious Bolivian and international dishes, made with locally sourced ingredients and prepared with care. The warmth of the dining area, combined with its open design and large windows, makes every meal a visual and sensory delight.
For those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, Luna Salada also features a serene spa complete with a sauna and jacuzzi. After a day of exploring the salt flats or nearby attractions such as Isla Incahuasi or the Tunupa Volcano, guests can unwind in this tranquil space while soaking in views of the white wilderness beyond.
Whether you come for the surreal scenery, the one-of-a-kind architecture, or the peaceful seclusion that only a remote, salt-built hotel can offer, Luna Salada promises an unforgettable stay—where nature, comfort, and wonder all come together in perfect harmony.
A Journey to the Edge of the World: The Arrival
The journey to Hotel Luna Salada is an adventure in itself. Whether you’ve arrived after a multi-day 4×4 expedition across the starkly beautiful Altiplano or a shorter transfer from the town of Uyuni, the anticipation builds with every kilometre. The landscape transforms from sparse, hardy vegetation and dusty tracks to an increasingly white, shimmering horizon. Uyuni town, with its bustling market and the poignant train cemetery, feels like a distant memory, a gateway to another realm.
As your vehicle crunches over the gravelly approach, the hotel doesn’t immediately scream for attention. Instead, it blends, almost organically, into the ochre and brown hues of the land that fringes the great white sea of salt. Luna Salada sits elevated, a strategic position offering panoramic views that are, quite frankly, breathtaking. It’s not a towering edifice but a sprawling, low-rise structure that respects its environment. The first thing that strikes you, even before you step out, is the architecture: rustic, robust, and undeniably unique.
Stepping out of the vehicle, the air is thin, crisp, and carries a distinct, clean scent – the faint tang of salt and minerals. At over 3,650 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level, you take a moment to adjust, your lungs working a little harder, your senses heightened. The silence, punctuated only by the wind or the distant call of a bird, is profound.
The main entrance is unassuming yet inviting. It’s not grand in a conventional sense, but its charm lies in its authenticity. Walls constructed from blocks of salt, hewn directly from the Salar, glint subtly in the sunlight. These aren’t perfectly uniform, machine-cut bricks; they bear the character of their origin, their surfaces textured and uneven, interspersed with a mortar that also seems to whisper of salt. Wooden beams, weathered and strong, frame the doorway.
Stepping Inside: A Realm of Salt and Warmth
Pushing open the heavy wooden door, you step from the bright, sometimes harsh, Andean sun into a haven of surprising warmth and texture. The transition is immediate and captivating. Your eyes adjust, and the first thing you register is the pervasive, yet subtle, scent of salt – not oceanic, but earthy, ancient.
The Lobby and Reception Area is where the “salt hotel” concept truly comes alive. The floor beneath your feet? Salt. Compacted, polished by countless footsteps, it has a surprisingly smooth, cool feel. You might even see patterns where moisture has subtly recrystallized, creating delicate, glittering mosaics. The reception desk itself is a formidable block of salt, its top smoothed into a functional surface. Behind it, a smiling face, often a local Bolivian with warm eyes and a welcoming demeanor, greets you. Check-in is usually unhurried, personal. You might be offered a cup of coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness, its earthy aroma mingling with the salt.
Look around. The walls are, of course, salt blocks. They aren’t painted or plastered over; their natural crystalline structure is the decoration. Interspersed are large windows, strategically placed to frame the jaw-dropping views of the Salar. Even the seating in some areas might be salt benches, softened with colorful, handwoven Andean textiles – alpaca wool throws in vibrant reds, blues, and yellows, providing a beautiful contrast to the muted tones of the salt.
Lighting is soft and warm, often emanating from rustic fixtures, perhaps wrought iron or carved wood, casting a gentle glow that makes the salt crystals subtly sparkle. It feels less like a hotel lobby and more like the comfortable, lived-in heart of a unique, grand home. There’s often a central fireplace, not always lit during the day but promising cozy evenings, its hearth also constructed from salt.
The Corridors: Passageways of Crystalline Wonder
Moving from the reception area towards the rooms or common areas, you traverse corridors that continue the salt theme. Again, salt floors, salt walls. It’s a tactile experience; you might find yourself running a hand along the cool, slightly rough surface of a wall, feeling the individual crystals. The corridors aren’t just functional; they are part of the immersive experience. They might be adorned with local artwork, photographs of the Salar in its different moods, or traditional Bolivian crafts, adding cultural depth to the architectural novelty. Some sections might open up to small courtyards or light wells, bringing in natural light and offering glimpses of the sky. The acoustics are interesting too; sound seems to be gently absorbed by the salt, creating a hushed, peaceful atmosphere.
The Rooms: Sanctuaries of Salt and Comfort
Opening the door to your room at Hotel Luna Salada is another moment of delightful surprise. The dedication to the salt theme is complete, yet it never feels gimmicky; instead, it’s remarkably cozy and inviting.
- The Walls and Floors: Unsurprisingly, the walls are constructed from salt blocks. This provides excellent insulation, keeping the rooms surprisingly warm at night despite the cold desert temperatures outside. The floors are also compacted salt, often covered with woven rugs made from llama or alpaca wool, soft and warm underfoot.
- The Bed: This is often the centerpiece and a major talking point. The bed base is typically a solid platform of salt blocks. Don’t worry, you’re not sleeping directly on salt! Atop this unique base is a comfortable, modern mattress, piled high with warm duvets and plush pillows. The juxtaposition of the rustic salt with luxurious bedding is part of the charm. Some rooms even feature salt headboards, intricately formed.
- Furniture: Bedside tables? Salt blocks. Perhaps a desk or a small table? Also salt. Even some of the decorative elements might be carved from salt. This commitment is impressive. However, it’s balanced with wooden chairs, perhaps a comfortable armchair upholstered in local fabric, ensuring practicality and comfort.
- Windows and Views: Every room is designed to maximize the incredible views. Large windows, often double-glazed for insulation, look out onto the vast expanse of the Salar de Uyuni. Waking up to see the sunrise paint the salt flats in hues of pink and orange, or watching the stars emerge in the incredibly clear night sky from the warmth of your bed, is an unforgettable experience.
- Heating: While the salt provides good insulation, the nights on the Altiplano are cold. Rooms are equipped with effective heating, often electric heaters or sometimes even small fireplaces (in suites), ensuring a comfortable temperature.
- Lighting: Soft, warm lighting enhances the cozy atmosphere. Bedside lamps, perhaps a standing lamp, all contribute to a restful ambiance. The way the light plays on the crystalline surfaces of the salt walls is subtly beautiful.
- The Bathroom: This is where practicality takes precedence, though often with nods to the local aesthetic. You won’t find salt showers (for obvious reasons!). Bathrooms are modern and functional, with hot water (a precious commodity in this remote region, usually heated by solar power and gas), flushing toilets, and standard amenities. The décor might incorporate local tiles, stone, or wood, complementing the overall rustic feel. You’ll find towels, soap, and shampoo, much like any good hotel.
- Special Touches: Details matter. Perhaps a small vase with dried local grasses, a piece of Andean art on the wall, or a locally woven textile draped over a chair. These touches add personality and a sense of place. Wi-Fi is generally available, though given the remote location, it can sometimes be slow or intermittent – a perfect excuse to disconnect and soak in the surroundings.
The overall feeling in the rooms is one of being cocooned – a safe, warm, and utterly unique haven against the stark, dramatic beauty of the outside world. It’s a place to rest, reflect, and marvel.
Common Areas: Hubs of Conviviality and Contemplation
Beyond the private sanctuaries of the rooms, Luna Salada offers several common areas designed for relaxation, socialization, and, of course, enjoying the views.
- The Main Lounge/Living Area: This is often the heart of the hotel, especially in the evenings. Picture a spacious room, again with salt walls and floors, dominated by a large, crackling fireplace. Comfortable sofas and armchairs, upholstered in rich textiles or leather, are arranged invitingly around it. Low tables, perhaps made of gnarled wood or, yes, salt, hold books about Bolivia, photography collections of the Salar, or board games. Large windows ensure the Salar is always in view, a constantly changing masterpiece. This is where guests gather after a day of exploring, sharing stories, sipping a glass of Bolivian wine, or simply gazing into the flames. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and quiet wonder.
- The Restaurant/Dining Room: Eating at Luna Salada is an experience in itself. The dining room continues the aesthetic – salt walls, perhaps a salt-block bar or serving area, and wooden tables and chairs. But the main focus here, aside from the food, is the view. Often, one entire wall will be glass, offering an unparalleled panoramic vista of the salt flats. Dining here at sunset is magical, as the sinking sun casts long shadows and paints the white expanse in unbelievable colors.
- The Food: The cuisine is a blend of Bolivian specialties and international dishes, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients where possible. Expect hearty soups (like quinoa soup), dishes featuring llama meat (surprisingly tender and lean), trout from Lake Titicaca, chicken, and beef. Potatoes, in their myriad Andean varieties, are a staple. Vegetarian options are usually available and thoughtfully prepared. Breakfast is typically a buffet with fruits, breads, eggs, local cheeses, yogurt, and, of course, coca tea and coffee. Dinners might be set menus or à la carte, always generous and warming. The presentation is often simple but appealing, letting the quality of the ingredients shine.
- The Bar: Adjacent to the lounge or dining room, there’s usually a well-stocked bar. Here, you can sample Bolivian beers, wines (the Tannats from Tarija are surprisingly good), or classic cocktails. Perhaps try a “Chuflay,” a popular Bolivian cocktail with Singani (a Bolivian grape spirit), ginger ale, and lime, or ask the bartender for a recommendation. The bar counter itself might be a magnificent slab of salt. It’s another convivial spot to unwind.
- Games Room/Recreation Area: Some salt hotels, including Luna Salada, feature a games room. This might include a pool table (often ingeniously constructed with salt elements!), foosball, or table tennis. It’s a great way to relax and have some fun, especially if the weather outside is particularly harsh or during downtime.
- Viewing Platforms/Terraces: Strategically placed outdoor terraces or viewing platforms allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the landscape. Furnished with simple benches or chairs, these are prime spots for photography, stargazing, or simply sitting in awe of the vastness. Wrapped in a warm alpaca blanket, watching the Milky Way blaze across the unpolluted night sky is an experience that borders on the spiritual.
Beyond the Salt Walls: The Experience
While the hotel itself is a destination, its prime purpose is to serve as a comfortable and unique base for exploring the Salar de Uyuni. Luna Salada typically facilitates or helps arrange tours:
- Salar de Uyuni Tours: These are the main event. 4×4 vehicles will pick you up from the hotel to explore the highlights:
- Isla Incahuasi (Fish Island): Famous for its giant cacti, this “island” in the middle of the salt flat offers incredible panoramic views.
- The Salt Extraction Mounds: See how local workers manually harvest the salt.
- Ojos de Sal (Salt Eyes): Small bubbling pools where subterranean water rises through the salt.
- Perspective Photos: The endless white horizon is perfect for those iconic, playful perspective shots.
- Sunset on the Salar: An absolute must, watching the sun dip below the horizon, setting the salt ablaze with color.
- Stargazing: The Altiplano, with its high altitude, clear skies, and lack of light pollution, is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The hotel’s location makes it easy to step outside and be mesmerized by the celestial display. Some hotels might even offer guided stargazing sessions.
- Sunrise Viewing: For early risers, watching the sunrise over the Salar from the hotel or a nearby vantage point is equally spectacular.
The Spa and Wellness (A Touch of Salty Indulgence)
Recognizing the therapeutic properties of salt and the desire for relaxation after adventurous days, Luna Salada often incorporates wellness facilities. This might not be a sprawling, multi-treatment spa in the urban sense, but rather a more intimate offering.
- Salt Baths or Hot Tubs: Imagine soaking in a hot tub, perhaps with mineral-rich water, gazing out at the Salar. Some might even offer private rooms with salt-infused baths.
- Massage Services: Simple massage treatments focusing on relaxation and relieving muscle soreness from hikes or long drives can be a welcome indulgence. The environment itself promotes a sense of calm.
- Sauna/Steam Room: A small sauna or steam room, perhaps even with salt-lined walls, provides a way to warm up and detoxify.
The emphasis is on natural therapies and leveraging the unique environment. The clean air, the profound silence, and the visual spectacle of the Salar are inherently therapeutic.
The Atmosphere and Service: Bolivian Hospitality
What truly elevates the experience at Hotel Luna Salada beyond its unique construction is the warmth of its people. The staff are often from the local communities, proud of their heritage and eager to share it. Service is generally heartfelt and genuine, if sometimes a little unpolished by international five-star standards. This isn’t a place of stiff formality; it’s a place of warmth and welcome.
Language can sometimes be a barrier if you don’t speak Spanish, but staff usually make a valiant effort, and a smile goes a long way. There’s a sense of community among the guests too, thrown together in this extraordinary place, sharing a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Conversations flow easily in the lounge, experiences are shared, and friendships are forged.
Sustainability and Connection to Place
There’s an increasing awareness of the fragile environment of the Salar. Hotels like Luna Salada often try to implement sustainable practices:
- Solar Power: Given the intense Andean sun, solar panels are commonly used for electricity and water heating.
- Water Conservation: Water is precious in this arid region, and guests are usually encouraged to be mindful of their usage.
- Waste Management: Responsible waste disposal is crucial in such a pristine environment.
- Local Sourcing: Using local materials for construction (the salt itself!), employing local staff, and sourcing food locally where possible contribute to the regional economy and reduce carbon footprint.
The very act of building with salt, a readily available local resource, is a form of sustainable architecture, minimizing the need to transport materials from afar.
The Intangible Magic: More Than Just a Hotel
A stay at Hotel Luna Salada is more than just checking into unique accommodation. It’s about:
- Immersion: Being completely enveloped by the Salar’s essence, both inside and out.
- Wonder: The constant sense of awe at the landscape and the ingenuity of the hotel’s construction.
- Tranquility: The profound peace that comes from being in such a vast, remote, and silent place.
- Connection: Connecting with nature on an epic scale, with a unique culture, and with fellow travelers.
- Memory-Making: It’s the kind of place that sears itself into your memory, a story you’ll tell for years to come.
Evening Falls: A Crystalline Cocoon Under a Blanket of Stars
As dusk settles over the Salar, Hotel Luna Salada transforms. The setting sun might turn the salt walls a soft pink or orange. Inside, the fireplaces are lit, casting flickering shadows and a warm, inviting glow. The aroma of dinner begins to waft from the kitchen. Guests gather, sharing photos and stories from their day’s adventures.
Later, stepping outside into the crisp night air is to be confronted with a celestial panorama of overwhelming beauty. The Milky Way stretches across the sky like a diamond river, unobscured by city lights. The silence is broken only by the wind or the faint crunch of salt underfoot.
Retreating to your salt room, you feel a sense of profound peace and contentment. The warmth of the room, the comfort of the bed, the unique embrace of the salt walls – it’s a cocoon against the vastness outside. You might gaze out the window one last time at the moonlit Salar, a silver sea stretching to infinity, before drifting off to sleep, dreaming of salt crystals and endless horizons.
Departing Thoughts: Carrying the Salt in Your Soul
Checking out of Hotel Luna Salada is bittersweet. You leave behind a truly unique structure and a landscape of unparalleled beauty. But you take with you the memories, the photographs, and perhaps a tiny crystal of salt as a memento. More than that, you carry a sense of having experienced something truly special, a place where human ingenuity and natural wonder have combined to create an unforgettable haven.
It’s not just a hotel built of salt; it’s a testament to adapting to and celebrating an extraordinary environment. It’s a quiet, sturdy sentinel on the edge of one of the world’s greatest natural marvels, offering warmth, comfort, and a perspective-shifting encounter with the raw, majestic beauty of the Bolivian Altiplano. Hotel Luna Salada is, in essence, a destination that seasons the soul. And as you drive away, watching it recede into the landscape, you know a part of that salty, starlit magic will stay with you long after the journey ends.
This deep dive, this “look inside,” attempts to capture the essence of what makes Hotel Luna Salada so much more than just bricks and mortar—or, in this case, salt and mortar. It’s an experience, a feeling, a journey into a different kind of luxury: the luxury of uniqueness, of connection to place, and of profound, quiet wonder. It’s a chapter in any Bolivian adventure that remains vividly etched in the traveller’s heart.

Beyond the Rustic Facade: Unveiling the Salt-Forged Luxury of Hotel Luna Salada
From a distance, as your 4×4 crunches along the gravel track that skirts the immense, shimmering expanse of the Salar de Uyuni, Hotel Luna Salada presents a picture of robust, rustic charm. Its silhouette, low-slung and earthy-toned, seems to grow organically from the ochre and brown hues of the Altiplano landscape. It doesn’t shout its presence with ostentatious grandeur; rather, it whispers an invitation, hinting at a harmonious existence with the stark, breathtaking environment it inhabits. The exterior walls, crafted from what appear to be rugged, sun-baked adobe or local stone, reinforced with sturdy wooden beams, speak of resilience against the high-altitude winds and the extremes of desert temperatures. It looks like a hardy frontier outpost, a welcoming shelter at the edge of an almost alien world.
But step across its threshold, and the initial impression of simple rusticity beautifully unfolds into a revelation of unique, captivating luxury. The air inside shifts, carrying a subtle, clean, almost crystalline scent. Your eyes adjust, and you realize you’ve entered a realm meticulously and artfully constructed almost entirely from the very essence of the Salar itself: salt. This isn’t a mere decorative flourish; it’s the fundamental building block, the soul of the hotel. The floors beneath your feet are compacted, polished salt, cool to the touch and gleaming faintly. The walls are composed of precisely hewn salt blocks, their surfaces catching the light, revealing intricate crystalline patterns and subtle variations in translucency. Even structural elements like pillars, archways, and even some furniture – from bed platforms to tables and benches – are ingeniously fashioned from this surprisingly versatile mineral.
This is where the “luxury” of Luna Salada truly defines itself. It’s not the gilded, ostentatious luxury of a city hotel, but a deeper, more experiential opulence. It’s the luxury of unparalleled uniqueness, of sleeping within walls that shimmer with ancient minerals, of dining in a room where the ambient light plays off crystalline surfaces. It’s the warmth of knowing that the salt blocks provide exceptional natural insulation, creating a surprisingly cozy haven against the often frigid Altiplano nights. It’s the thoughtful design that blends this raw, natural material with soft, high-quality Andean textiles – alpaca wool throws in vibrant colours, intricately woven rugs that cushion your step on the salt floors – and comfortable, contemporary furnishings. The result is an atmosphere that is both profoundly earthy and remarkably refined, making a stay not just a night’s lodging, but an immersive art installation you can inhabit.
Strategically positioned approximately 45 minutes’ drive from the bustling, somewhat chaotic hub of Uyuni town, Hotel Luna Salada offers a precious sense of seclusion and direct communion with the Salar. This distance is not an inconvenience but a deliberate advantage, placing guests on the very doorstep of the natural wonder they’ve come to witness. The journey itself, whether by private transfer or the hotel’s reliable and comfortable shuttle service, becomes part of the experience – a transition from civilization into a more primal, awe-inspiring landscape. This shuttle service efficiently bridges the gap, ensuring easy accessibility for guests arriving by bus or plane into Uyuni.
Once ensconced within Luna Salada’s salty embrace, the need to venture back to town for amenities becomes virtually non-existent. The hotel is a self-contained sanctuary, thoughtfully equipped to offer everything you would need for a comfortable, memorable, and enriching stay. The on-site restaurant is a culinary highlight, serving a delightful fusion of Bolivian specialties and international cuisine, often featuring local ingredients like quinoa, llama, and trout, all enjoyed in a dining room where vast windows frame the ever-changing spectacle of the Salar. A well-stocked bar provides the perfect spot for an evening Pisco Sour or a glass of Bolivian wine, perhaps enjoyed by the warmth of a crackling fireplace, also, naturally, constructed from salt.
Common areas are designed for both convivial interaction and quiet contemplation, with comfortable lounges inviting guests to share stories of their day’s adventures or simply lose themselves in a book, all while surrounded by the unique salt architecture. Rooms are havens of warmth and comfort, with plush bedding atop salt-brick platforms, efficient heating, en-suite bathrooms with hot water (a true blessing in this remote region), and, crucially, those mesmerizing views. While Wi-Fi is generally available, its speed can be a reminder of the hotel’s splendid isolation, encouraging a welcome disconnection from the everyday and a deeper connection to the present moment. The hotel staff can also arrange expertly guided tours onto the Salar, ensuring guests can explore its vastness and iconic sights like Isla Incahuasi with ease and insight.
And then there are the views. The Salar de Uyuni doesn’t just sit near the hotel; it unfurls directly in front of it, an almost impossibly vast white canvas stretching to the horizon. This immediate proximity grants guests at Luna Salada an unparalleled, front-row seat to one of Earth’s most surreal landscapes. Waking up to see the sunrise paint the salt flats in hues of soft pink, fiery orange, and brilliant gold is an experience that words struggle to capture. Throughout the day, the light plays across the Salar, changing its texture and mood. And as evening descends, the sunset transforms it into a breathtaking spectacle of colour, followed by a display of stars in the unpolluted night sky so vivid it feels as though you could reach out and touch them. These magnificent, uninterrupted vistas are not just a backdrop; they are an integral part of the Luna Salada experience, visible from many of the rooms, the dining area, and specially designed viewing terraces, constantly reminding you of the extraordinary world you inhabit, even if just for a few nights.

You may have visited ice hotels in Sweden or tree top canopy suites in remote rainforests. But has anything prepared you for Bolivia’s salt hotel?
The Luna Salada – the Salt Moon – Hotel is one of the most extraordinary ideas in the hotel world. It doesn’t just command a panoramic view over the glittering Salt Flats of Uyuni – it is itself actually built from the blocks of salt mined from its surroundings. If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, make sure a stay at Luna Salada Hotel is on the itinerary of your tailor-made holiday to Bolivia.

The Ethereal Frontier: Approaching a Realm Hewn from Salt
Long before you reach its distinctive silhouette, the Salar de Uyuni asserts its presence on the horizon. At first, it’s an almost imperceptible shimmer, a band of intense, otherworldly light that seems to hover between the stark ochre earth and the vast, cerulean canvas of the Altiplano sky. As you draw nearer, this mirage solidifies, resolving into an immeasurable expanse that defies easy description. It is, in essence, a colossal, petrified ocean of salt, a seemingly infinite stretch of blindingly white earth. Under the relentless Andean sun, it doesn’t just resemble ice and snow; it feels like stepping onto a frozen Arctic plain, yet one touched by an alien, mineral magic. The air above it vibrates with a crystalline clarity, and the silence is so profound it seems to have a weight of its own.
Perched on the very precipice of this breathtaking desolation, a mere 30 kilometers (a significant yet manageable distance that preserves its tranquility) from the wonderfully gritty, pioneer-spirited gateway village of Uyuni, Hotel Luna Salada emerges. It’s not a towering monument vying for attention, but rather a collection of low-slung, unassuming buildings that seem to huddle organically against the vastness. Their walls, at first glance, possess a startling, almost luminous whiteness, gleaming under the high-altitude sun. And indeed, as your mind begins to connect the dots in this unique environment, you realize this is no ordinary whitewash. These are walls painstakingly, ingeniously constructed from solid blocks of salt, hewn directly from the Salar itself. This elemental architecture is crowned with rustic, dark thatched roofs – a striking, almost primal contrast of textures and origins – that speak of traditional shelter and a deep respect for the local vernacular. The entire exterior hints at a robust, earthy charm, a haven built from the very land it surveys.
Yet, this fascinating exterior, for all its unique character, is merely the overture. The truly profound surprise, the moment that redefines your understanding of “unique accommodation,” awaits within. Push open a heavy, wooden door, and you step from the bright, often harsh, exterior world into a realm of unexpected warmth, texture, and astonishing artistry. The air inside feels different – cooler, yet imbued with a subtle, clean, mineral tang. Your eyes adjust, and the revelation unfolds: the very floors beneath your feet are compacted, polished salt, cool and surprisingly smooth, with intricate crystalline patterns subtly catching the ambient light. Look around. The reception desk is a formidable block of salt; the walls surrounding you are composed of those same salt bricks, their translucent qualities creating a soft, diffused glow.
And the immersion deepens as you explore further. In the common areas, you’ll find substantial tables, their tops thick slabs of salt, perhaps resting on salt-brick pedestals. Benches and even some chair structures are artfully carved from the same ubiquitous material, often softened with vibrant, handwoven Andean textiles. But it’s in the sanctuary of your private room that the commitment to this extraordinary medium reaches its zenith. Imagine discovering that the very platform for your king-sized bed – a commanding, solid plinth – is meticulously constructed from salt blocks. It’s a surreal yet wonderfully grounding experience, a direct connection to the ancient Salar even in your most restful moments. Bedside tables, decorative niches, perhaps even elements of the light fixtures, all pay homage to this singular, crystalline resource, transforming a hotel stay into an unparalleled, immersive encounter with the soul of the Salar.
See the inside and out of what you may find and see in this unique hotel made of salt

The rooms at Luna Salada Hotel are all made of salt but the main walking area is covered with wood. There are rooms with a full salt experience too but I preferred have the main area covered.

From the lobby there was a long stretch of individual alcoves like this, including sofas, beds for lounging, and hammocks. That space station feel was in full effect. At the end of the hall, the restaurant and bar boasted spectacular views of the salt flats through the windows.Food they served are bountiful and great.

The main colors are white (salt) with blue (sky) decorations and artwork in local style. All the furniture’s framework is made of salt but for the rest is as normal furniture. The bed is large and has a quality mattress with comfortable pillows. It’s back to basics without TV and Wi-Fi but the view outside is just as good as a TV.

Within the lobby the ground was paved with white salt too, and the walls were made of white salt bricks. The entire hotel held little sitting areas with fireplaces and cozy seating.

Once again I noticed the salt on the floor, along the edge of the room and the walls were all made of salt bricks.

The surrounding landscape of the desert salt flats truly made me feel as though were on some other planet. The grounds of the hotel were seemingly endless and the staff was extremely hospitable. It was a wonderful, relaxing retreat in between the hard travelling behind and ahead of me. After an overnight stay, the next day I started my 3 days private Bolivian outback tour starting from the salt flat trek all the way to the Atacama desert of Chile.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
– Hunter S. Thompson
